About Our Program

The Rockbridge Academy Instrumental Music Program is open to students in grades one through twelve. The program is directed by Irma Cripe, a professional cellist, experienced music educator and SAA certified Suzuki Instructor.

The Instrumental Music Program began in 2006 with the fledgling Rockbridge Academy Orchestra comprised of students already experienced in their instruments. In 2007 Suzuki Strings group lessons were introduced for beginning violins and cellos. Summer Music Camps were added in 2008 to help string students keep sharp during the summer months. In 2009 the program expanded again with the addition of the Scots Orchestra, a string orchestra for early to intermediate string players, as well as Strings Summer Serenade, a summer camp program for all string musicians.

During the 2013-2014 school year introductory programs were added for trumpet and flute for students in grades four through eight. In 2014-2015 Rockbridge Academy added a Wind Ensemble that provides an appropriate place for early to intermediate wind players (both brass and woodwinds) to experience playing in a group setting. The Wind Ensemble will prepare wind players for participation in the Rockbridge Academy Orchestra.

Registration Information

For questions about any of our instrumental programs please contact Mrs. Irma Cripe, Program Director, at icripe@rockbridge.org and she will direct you to the appropriate teacher. Students who are new to the Orchestras should contact Mrs.Cripe regarding auditions before enrolling.

Students are required to provide their own instruments and students in the Rockbridge Academy Orchestra, the Scots Orchestra, and the Wind Ensemble are strongly encouraged to continue with private lessons as the emphasis in these programs is on group performance more than on individual technique or player development.

Instrumental Music Program fees are non-refundable. A schedule of fees for the current year may be found HERE.
