Luke McDowell (EM to 2023)

Luke McDowell is married to Sophie, and they currently have two children at Rockbridge Academy: Noelle (10th grade) and Amelia (5th grade). Their oldest son, Ryan, graduated from Rockbridge in 2020. Luke first learned about classical Christian education in 2007, which quickly prompted them to switch Ryan to Rockbridge for first grade. Since then, all the McDowell children have started at Rockbridge as early as possible. Luke is especially thankful for how their education has integrated Christ into all subjects, provided robust academic rigor and preparation for the future, and done so in a way that inspired many dinner-time discussions related to all that they were learning. Luke is a member of Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Annapolis, where he is involved with the high school ministry and with hosting and teaching a weekly small group Bible study for families. Luke is a professor of computer science at the U.S. Naval Academy. He has taught there for 15 years and served for the last four years as the associate chair of the department; he hopes that this education experience might be useful background for serving on the Rockbridge board. Luke holds a BSE degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University and a Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Washington.

Mathew Soltis (EM to 2021)

Mathew is a native of Millersville and holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland. He started his career in cancer research at the National Institutes of Health as a biochemist. He has worked for the last 20+ years leading internet technology and global software teams. He currently runs the Americas Cloud team at F5 Networks. Mathew and his wife Ann have been blessed to be involved with the Rockbridge Academy community for the past 14 years, with Ann teaching 5th grade for the last 8 years. They have four children, Grace (alumna, currently at the University of Maryland), Sarah (alumna, currently at College of William & Mary) and current students Mary and Edward. Mathew is a member of Bay Area Community Church in Annapolis, where he is involved in the small group ministry and leads a Missional Community. He came to faith in Christ at a young age and continues to be a disciple of God and His Word. The integration of a Christian worldview in every subject is what drew his family to Rockbridge. He has a desire to help raise the next generation for Christ and specifically encourage them in the Creation Mandate and the Great Commission. Over the last five years, he helped start and coach the Rockbridge varsity and middle school swim team and has treasured the opportunity to get to know the swimmers and their families. On the pool deck and with his own family, he has seen the fruits of the classical Christian model in the character, work ethic, and spiritual maturity of the students. He hopes to use his business and leadership experience to help benefit the Rockbridge mission as they expand and fully occupy the Evergreen Campus.
